unexpected snow day!

The forecast called for cold, dry weather (or so I thought!) so on this, the last day of 2012 I planned to put the primer coat of paint on bootsy star. The professional at Miller Paint told me that I would need four dry days in a row to paint. First prime, then wait a day, then paint, then a day to dry. I thought it would be the perfect week to paint! I headed out this morning after a few errands. The Miller guy said I should paint between 10am-2pm in the winter to maximize daylight and 'heat' for drying. I thought that would be no problem, giving me an hour per side of the shop.
The first wall and a half went fine, but then the snow started. I hoped for just a few flakes and pressed on. I had to stop when my paint try started to fill with snow.

Well, at least I got a little bit done. I won't complain that my afternoon will be spent in front of a warm fire with french onion soup and my dogs. Oh...I will also look around online for some flooring......

wait...is that snow??

so that's about as far as I could get

she so wants to be warm, but still at my side

In other new, at home depot this morning I came across these fun items. The holiday stuff is all 50% off so I picked up these 'super sphere' lights for $3.74 each and the packs of bulbs for $3.00 each! I think I might hang the super sphere lights in bootsy star and the ornaments are for the outside christmas trees of years passed. Fun!

the roof, the roof, the roof is on.....bootsy star

Wow! What a difference a day makes!
Today was just as cold as yesterday- and also just as clear. It was really nice to see the sun up there, even if we couldn't feel much heat from it.

Jenn came over and her and I got started filling more of the nail holes while James finished up on the tip top of the East eave.

East eave is done and the sun is shining down on us

Hunter always enjoys Jen's visits...and Penny is always jealous
We started out with the roofing on the South side of bootsy star. First step: getting the metal up to the roof.
James and Jen hauling (metal)

James checking to make sure the metal is straight

...and checking again from another angle

Penny supervises Jen on putty duty
Jen came in to put the second coat of paint on one of the doors. The color is a really dark gray. Then she headed out to bootsy star to bleach the other door and paint it. There was about a 40 degree difference between inside and outside!
These doors will look really great when they are done

Blurry hand bleach action (and nice view out my window!)
We had our (usual) shift change in the afternoon. Lauren (and Nate) came over and Jen headed home. Lauren is not afraid to just climb right up that scaffolding, so James gets A LOT more done when she is around. ahem.
Hunter watches as Penny and Nate sniff it out

Jen paints first coat on the second door
James and Lauren headed over to the North side of the shop to put up roofing. James is showing of his strength for Lauren- who is obviously impressed.
James and Lauren...the dream team

James and Lauren consulting on where to put the next screw

James trusts Lauren to handle the metal

Lauren: "cheeeeeese!" James: "is she still on with that camera?"
Nate and Penny enjoyed running around the property and playing tag. And hide and seek. And 'what is it? I dunno, let's eat it!'
dog fight!....not really

Almost done!
I had to make a home depot trip for more of the roofing screws and this was the view on  my way home. It's really so lovely to see this every day, let me tell you.
The view from about a .75 miles from my house

Adding the tippy top thing

Ladder adjustment is an art form

Boom! we have a roof!
It was so awesome to finish the siding and get the roof up. I LOVE how the it turned out. It was great to see Jen and Lauren and to have their help. They bring not only hands to help but they both have such positive energy and really lift James and I up when we want to just set the whole thing on fire. xx

The plan for next weekend is to get the french doors installed so we can keep the inside dry and then start in on the ceiling. bootsy star is more than half way done!

nearer and nearer to a roof

We took the Christmas holiday weekend off from construction on bootsy star. We plan to get a lot done this weekend to make up for the time off.

The metal roofing was ready to pick up from Lowe's so we headed in on Friday morning.

James and the dudes from Lowes load up the metal
First, James had to repair some wind damage to the tar paper.
Up, up to the top of the roof he goes

A man up in the sky...ish

Penny...just happy to be here

Oh! here he is from the other side!

Almost done

Time to lay out the South side of the roof

It looks like we've got a pretty exact match to the shop

Checking for the fit of the flashing
Before we put the roof on, we needed to finish siding the North side of the shop and also the eaves on the West and East sides.
Finishing the siding

Note James new ear protection? He got those for Christmas! They attach to an mp3 player so he can listen to music while he works. It's funny to hear him break out some Mumford and Sons.....
This shot is purely for the ear protection

Notching out for the window on the North side

Side note: Isn't nature just the loveliest; the coolest?

Hunter is THRILLED to be out in 38 degree weather

Lunch break! Nichols...one of our favorites

Siding up the eaves

Friday ended with the North side of the shop sided and most all of the eaves on the West.

This morning when we got up it was not raining. Lovely! I let the girls out and the beelined it outta the coop looking for worms and bugs.

Eloise is like 'what are you looking at?!'

This guy came back again today
Can you spot  Penny in the photo below?
I don't know what this is....but I like it!

It was COLD but not raining
The dogs and I walked around the property while James worked away. Note that Penny and Hunter are on the other side of our property line. How rude.
Penny and Hunter- rule breakers

Is that a blue sky?!

getting ready to add the flashing

level it out!

I'm up on the scaffolding!

Penny is trying to figure out how to get to me

Ok, on to the East eave

getting there....

completed West side

Just as he got to the top we lost the light

Until tomorrow.....

It was incredibly cold out there so when we lost the light we were not terrible disappointed. The plan for tomorrow is to finish those last few pieces of siding on the eave and then add the 12 pieces of metal roofing (six on each side) and the thing that goes over the top. ....whatever that is called!
